In this update: Land speed pioneer Hal Needham passes away
Hal Needham 1931 – 2013
Hal Needham passed away today at the age of 82. He was the owner and man behind one of the most recognized land speed efforts; the first automobile to break the sound barrier. The Budweiser Rocket Car with Stan Barrett driving, made a 731.9 mph run at Edwards Air Force Base on December 17, 1979. Hal was a Korean War veteran, and a paratrooper noted for his toughness. He later became a bit player in the movies and a stuntman/double in more than 300 featured films. Given the opportunity to direct, his debut film as a director was ” Smokey and the Bandit.” A close friend of Burt Reynolds, the two were noted for changing Hollywood films forever with a new “red neck” down south genre. Panned by critics after the release, today, Smokey and Bandit has had an estimated $365 million gross income. Hats off to a pioneer speedster, a daredevil, a film icon, and a man who lived life to its fullest.
Every single time the North American Eagle™ was on display, at least one fan would talk about the amazing accomplishments of the Budweiser Rocket Car. Ed and Keith have been at Edwards Air Force base many times, and on every single visit, they met someone who was present on that December day in 1979. We never had the privilege to meet Mr Needham, but we knew that he and driver Stan Barrett, along with the car builder Bill Fredrick, paved the way for teams like ours to receive the visibility that we do today. He will always be remembered in the history of land speed racing.
