After fun times on the Alvord, Team NAE surveys the aftermath and gets to work: Ed Shadle, Les Holm, Von Armstrong, Steve Rima, Chris Greene, Andrew Kirk, Jon Higley, Keith Zanghi, John Winchester, and Brandyn Bayes were at the hanger ready to work.

Since the initial digital scanning of the jet car, significant changes have been made; to the rear axle in particular. Getting the car ready for a new scan is a priority. The running axle has been re-installed and the new rear fairing components were assembled and attached. Chris and Andrew put them back on and they are ready for more preparation prior to scanning. The young men did that job so well that they were moved to the front of the fuselage and set to the task of removing the front wheel from the steering compartment. The crew chief cracked the whip from a sitting position with a watchful eye. All five wheels are being inspected for wear or damage after the recent high speed runs at Alvord.
Keith and Les removed the two mid wheels and inspection revealed some wheel bearing issues that will require some attention from Steve Green and his fine folks at Eagle Machine, Inc. His shop is just across our northern border with Canada.
Von cleans up the David Clark Headsets
Von went through all of the David Clark communication headsets, cleaning the Alvord Desert dirt out of them and packaging them up, ready to be voice tested before their next use. Meanwhile, Jon Higley was busy sprucing up the car’s exterior, still coated with the ever present lakebed dirt.
Steve performs a vacuum test of the pitot tube lines
Steve Rima went through the cockpit and some data acquistion items, finding a couple of things that work toward skewing data analysis, including a faulty line to the pitot tube. These will be corrected.
John headed home to his sewing machine to do some repairs on the parachutes
John Winchester stopped by to pick up the parachutes that were deployed during our speed tests. He takes them home to be inspected and repaired as needed. The test runs revealed some improvements that are needed for better deployment.
Brandyn Bayes, our young computer guru, brought along his trusty laptop and gave a short presentation about changes he has made to our web pages, and some that are in the works. He is keeping Keith and Von up to speed in how we best can keep the website and all the media links up to date and current. He also has a firm finger on all the buttons to push to track our viewer “hits” on the websites. He has some impressive numbers, some four fold over periods prior to our most recent and very successful speed runs and subsequent media coverage.
The team spent about an hour discussing and adding to a check list of needed tasks to be done on our road to record setting. Some are very time crunching, and some are further down the line. All need to be addressed and time has a way of sneaking up on us. The more media attention that comes our way, the more requests are made that require time, energy, and expenses. We are very grateful to our sponsors, we are truly thankful for those who are considering sponsorship, and we are determined to stay the course on our way to a new world landspeed record.
