A trace of snow was falling this morning at our Spanaway, Wa. hangar as a good turnout of team members turned to: Steve Wallace, Von Armstrong, Ed Shadle, Sean Rondestvedt, Keith Zanghi, Chris Greene, Omar Chramosta, John Drury, Rich Pengelley, Sam Yellowbird, Brandyn Bayes and John Winchester.

Demonstration of Thermal Properties of LizardSkin® at 350 Degrees

Early visitors were Larry Boyd and friend, Ron Harris.  Driving all the way from Kennewick, they came to discuss the proper application of the LizardSkin® protective coating Larry provides.  It not only protects exposed metal from corrosion and damage, but more importantly acts as an effective heat absorbent material. It is being used on the interior walls of the tail cone that covers the afterburner, and on the mid wheel cover and fairings.  Larry  demonstrated how the heat is absorbed by using  a hot plate, some ice cubes,  and sample applications of LizardSkin®. The ice melted rapidly on the unprotected areas….but was hardly affected when placed on the applied area.  More and thicker applications are in the North American Eagle’s future.

Also visiting today was our good friend and sponsor from Uremet Corporation.  Mark Moore and daughter, Brooke, came by to talk to Ed and Keith and to look over the car.  Mark builds over 75% of the world’s roller coaster and amusement park ride wheels…and the rear wheels and rotors on the North American Eagle™

Keith, Sean, Omar and Chris were hard at work laying out and fabricating forward support mounts that will attach to the rear axle. This will provide added strength and reduce torsion and strain on vulnerable areas.

Steve continued the major task of converting the data acquisition compartment with new technology components from National Instruments.  These will result in a much more efficient and reliable way of system monitoring and data analysis, and will carry on in to the cockpit and instrument panel.

John Winchester and Sam Yellowbird have both been busy “working virtual” at home. (I’ll have to check with Keith but I think that means it is warmer and quieter there)  Sam came in bearing a slick new hydraulic  pump kit that he built up.  It will simplify refilling the hydraulic reservoir and lines.  John Winchester showed up with an extra long appendage…..adding 10 feet of new, light weight  parachute deployment line for the low speed chutes.  Rich Pengelley assumed his position under the belly of the beast, fitting the mid wheel compartment closure.

Ed Shadle and Omar Chramosta spent most of the day in his drivers seat and installed two new temperature gauges.  They monitor the temperature on the LevX® Magnetic Brake rotors.  After a coat of paint during the week, Ed will install the new faceplate and gauges next week.

 Number # 1 Batmobile Sold

One of the real rewarding aspects of a project like this is all the people you get to meet. Barris Kustom in North Hollywood is one such group. George Barris is the creater of the original Batmobile. Today it was sold at Barrett-Jackson Auctioners in Scottsdale AZ for $4.2 million dollars!  There were only five Batmobiles made.  Cars 2 through 5 were made from molds pulled from the original.

Justin Woods, Ed, George Barris, JoJi Barris and boyfriend, Tony Woods and Keith

Over the years Ed and Keith have visited Barris Kustom and become friends with the entire family.  At an El Mirage test session, George came out to watch the Eagle run.

Bend, Not Break depicts a journey from imprisonment to freedom, and from the dogmatic anticapitalism of Mao’s China to the high-stakes, take-no-prisoners world of technology start-ups in the United States. It is a tribute to one woman’s courage in the face of cruelty and a valuable lesson on the enduring power of resilience.
