That old song about, April Showers Bringing May Flowers, was the theme of the day as the North American Eagle™ team stayed to the confines of the hanger to pursue our goal of breaking the world land speed record. Joining us today were Eric Helpenstell, Omar Chramosta, Ken Broyles, Cam Shadle, Rich Pengelley, Steve Wallace, Brandyn Bayes, Les Holm, Keith Zanghi, Ed Shadle and two new team members, Lars Pedersen and Blake Sanders.
|Lars Pedersen||Blake Sanders|
Our two newest members spend a great deal of time on the road in order to get to the Eagle’s hangar. Lars Pedersen lives in Longview WA and Blake Sanders lives North in Bellevue WA. Lars is a retired machinist with 36 years supporting machinery in the lumber industry. There is nothing he can’t do with a piece of metal! Today he sharpened the 2,600 dull drill bits we have collected over the years! Lars provides a wealth of knowledge and we look forward to his presence on the team.
Blake Sanders is about 20% into his career as an engineer, currently working at Boeing. He is applying for his masters degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics at the University of Washington. Today his enthusiasm spread throughout the shop and and lent a helping hand to everyone. Welcome to the team, Blake!

A new level of support from Lenovo has really changed the landscape in our operations. In the very near future, the Landspeed.com website will be residing on servers on loan from Lenovo. A new ThinkServer will now be hosting all the content from the website, and provide storage for our engineering and intellectual property needs.
Lenovo is heavily embedded into our daily operations, with ThinkPads and ThinkStations providing support for website production, engineering consisting of mechanical and structural analysis, and aerodynamic capabilities. Now we are pleased to announce the addition of new Lenovo ThinkServers to the North American Eagle™ team.
|ThinkPad, ThinkStation and now ThinkServer|
The tagline accompanying the Lenovo Logo above, For Those That Do, best describes the make up of the team to help us on our incredible journey. No matter what the roadblock: technology, safety or engineering, the team finds a way. The team uses two large ThinkStations specifically built to handle our CFD (computational fluid dynamics). Darren Grove and Chris Plass are running C and D series ThinkStations to run the Metacomp CFD++ software and the associated pre and post software (Pointwise Software and CEI EnSight Gold Software). In addition, many of the team members are running Dassault Systemes CATIA V5 for computer aided drafting. Don Mitchell is running Geomagic Software to convert point clouds to surfaces and IMS Software to convert CATIA files to NC Machine for rapid prototype and machining operations.
Cam and Ken continued to work on the lower engine bay access door. During our last test session the door sustained damage from having a positive mis-fair and a peeling back of the skin from the blast of the desert playa. A modification of all lower access panels on the lower lobe of the vehicle is underway to prevent this from happenning on future runs. The two should complete all drilling operations and begin replacing the several hundred rivets. Cam works on the 777 flight line and Ken is a retired AOG (Aircraft on Ground) mechanic. He has traveled the world repairing disabled aircraft. We are lucky to have these two on the team.
Blake and Ed worked on the parachute deployment system. Working closely with John Winchester and Chris Greene, modifications are being made to the latch mechanism, to better hold up in the harsh enviroment. Today the two were performing functional tests to ensure proper operations.

|Ed, Rich and Eric shared a laugh|
Rich and Eric began removing some outdated decals, which will be replaced with brand new Signs By Tomorrow Houston South towards the end of the month. In about two weeks, new paint will be applied to many areas of the vehicle and then replacement decals will be re-applied. The work is tedious but nearly done. Les put the final touches on our new hydraulic lift system. During this past week, Les and Ed have been working at the hanger. Les completed the access panel. All that remains is some hydraulics details from Scott Robertson and painting by Keith.
Following their placing third in the Auburn FIRST Robotics Competition Regional a week ago, the Graham-Kapowsin robotics team was invited to the Pacific Northwest Regional Championship! They will be competing with their robot this weekend in Portland. Watch our Facebook and Twitter for updates from the team on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
