NAE™ Project: Update September 1, 2006 Ladies and Gentlemen: At this year's Bonneville Speedweek, Team NAE™ made some good contacts, learned some new things, and renewed old friendships. Current world land speed record holder in the Unlimited, or thrust powered class, Andy Green was at Speedweek this year as driver of the new JCB DieselMax Streamliner. In the weeks following Speedweek the JCB Streamliner set a new world land speed record of 350.092 mph making it the worlds fastest diesel powered car. The twin engine diesel powered car was a crowd favorite with a whole entourage of Tractor / Trailer Rigs, Hospitality Trailers, Ultralights, Communication Trailers and almost 30 uniformed team members. We met up with Andy Green during the Saturday Drivers Meeting held each year prior to the event. He and Ed Drumheller II got talking about parachutes and Andy invited us over to the hangar the team was renting at the Wendover Airport. At the hangar, Andy gave Ed II instruction on preparing a closed loop termination end on our parachute line. The process was captured on film and ED II will prepare a process that we can refer to in the future. The technique was fairly complicated, but the end results were magnificent. You've got to wonder who came up with the idea the first time. When done, Andy was left with a perfect braided loop. At the hangar Alastair MacQueen showed the team the revolutionary technique the JCB DieselMax crew uses to reef down their parachutes. Through a lot of testing, Andy and Alastair came up with the simple solution to eliminate parachute failures. The aerodynamic engineer on the JCB Dieselmax was none other than Ron Ayers. Ron was the chief engineer on the ThurstSSC. He met with all the team members and offered insight and suggestions to the North American Eagle™ effort. On Tuesday of Speedweek, Team NAE™ was invited to the JCB DieselMax Pits and attended a barbecue. It was a great evening which was attended to by many of the Bonneville racers. "Landspeed Louise" Ann Noeth was there and it was good to meet up with her again. Landspeed Louise has a great article in the September issue of the Good Guys Magazine highlighting the North American Eagle™ Team's efforts to return the record to North America. Also on hand during Speedweek was Tim Ennis from MotoCam®. Tim was at Bonneville support-ing many of his customers. He stopped by and installed one of his MotoCam360® on Shadle’s 762 Roadster. Tim was supporting the Faulkner-Livingston Motorcycle Team with their driver Susan Richardson. On Tuesday, Tim installed a couple of MotoCam360 cameras in the 762 Roadster. One camera was pointed forward and other towards the rear to capture the parachute opening. We'll have the video soon and will put it on the web. Motocam® is a longtime sponsor of the North American Eagle™. Steve Green and his brother Dave along with their cousin Eric were pitted right next to the 762 Roadster. This year was exciting for the team because National Geographic has been following them, and in particular, Steve's niece, Nadine Endicott. Nadine is the driver of Dave's lakester and National Geographic had cameras mounted all over the purple lakester. The National Geographic show will air later this year and we will let you know when it happens. We invite you to add a comment, or remark, about our program or the site. Interested in helping us make history and bring the record back to North America? Here's how!
