NAE™ Project: Update Archives Ladies & Gentlemen: The Edwards Air Show 2005 Tour has been made possible by financial donations by the following companies: LevX™ Corporation, McVay Mobile Welding, Eagle Machine, Inc, Aerial Machine and Tool, B & I Shopping Center, S&S Turbine Services Ltd, Don Small and Son Petroleum and Rapp Hydema US. Without their support, our appearance at Edwards Air Force Base would not be possible. Wednesday, October 19, 2005 The team had planned to head south by mid-day, but had to finish an assembly check of the magnetic axle so finishing work could be done by Steve Green. Steve will be heading south on Friday after completing the work. The test proved impressive for Ed & Keith. We finally left town just shy of seven that evening. The team caravanned down I-5 and decided to continue through the night. Thursday, October 20, 2005 Breakfast was had in Corning at the truck stop. Having learned that there had been a significant rainstorm that had put Rogers Dry Lake under water, we began contacting the alternate locations at Vandenberg AFB, George AFB, and Mohave Airport to see if they might allow us to use their facility as a fallback should the lakebed not dry out sufficiently for use. One hour before arriving at our destination, Mohave, the truck had a tire blow a recap tread. So, we had to pull into Pixley, the nearest town along Hwy. 99, and have a new tire put on. The team had dinner at Mike's Rest. in Mohave and celebrated our arrival by watching our latest Discovery Canada show, "The World's Fastest Wheels". Friday, October 21, 2005 The team got up at 7:00 am and went to breakfast at Jerry's Rest. in Mohave. Gathered together were Ed, Keith, Jon, Bill, Bernard, John Drury, Tim Finley, Jerry & Marylin Lamb, John Zambrano, Dave Selby, Don Miholovich, and Mark Sequin. We then went out onto Edwards AFB to begin the process of setting up. After getting onto the base, the team unloaded the car and set it up for display. Lakebed Larry, the base's official for the Rogers Dry Lake runways, took Ed, Keith and Jon out onto the lakebed to look over the conditions. Surprisingly, it was in much better condition than we had thought. So, it appears there will be no need to go elsewhere after all. Saturday, October 22, 2005 The team was up before the sun came up today and was on the flight line before it rose above the horizon. The crowds were soon thick across the entire display area. They came steadily through the day of clear skies and hot, unrelenting sunshine. The mid-afternoon brought General Joe Engle, former pilot of 56-0763, to a visit and sit in the cockpit for a photo shoot with Ed Shadle. A team picture was taken with the General and his lovely wife. By the end of the day nearly all of the team, with the exception of Steve Green who would be arriving later in the evening, had made it to the base. The first day of the air show was closed with a mock Pearl Harbor air raid of three different models of restored Japanese WWII aircraft and a final review fly-by of all aircraft seen in the day's show. Two-Star General Joe Engle, former pilot of 763, visited our display & was enthusiastically supportive of our project's efforts to bring the land speed record back to North America. He signed pictures of the NAE™ for both the team and Ed Shadle. On Ed's picture, he wrote a P.S. which said, "Ed, Don't bend my old bird." Retired SR-71 Sled Drive Brian Schul came by to say "Hi" to the team and grace the NAE™'s cockpit. After the show was over, the team quickly began preparing for moving the NAE™ into its staging area for preparation of tests. It will undergo installation of the magnetic braking axle to be tested during test runs over the next four days.
