NAE™ Project: Update Archive May 4, 2004 Ladies and Gentleman:
About an hour North of Reno Nevada is the small town of Quincy California and home of American Valley Aviation (AVA). The motto of the company is "No Air Power Without Ground Power". They carry a huge inventory of Ground Support Equipment (GSE). They supply the World's Air Forces with equipment designed to keep them in the air. As you have read in previous updates, AVA is an official sponsor of the North American Eagle™ World Land Speed Record Challenger. The AVA Start Cart is crucial to the success of this project. For those readers who are not familiar with this piece of equipment let me explain the importance. On your automobile in order to start your car is a small electric motor called a starter. It runs off of your car battery and turns the engine over until the vehicle is able to operate on its own. The North American Eagle™ is very similar. The difference is, instead of a 200 HP engine under the hood, the NAE™ uses a 39,000 HP S&S Turbines Turbojet engine. In order to turn this engine over you need something much more powerful then an automotive starter: Enter AVA and their M32A-60B Start Cart. The AVA Start Cart is a turbine powered piece of equipment that has a large air compressor and electric generator to start the engine of the NAE. In this Special Update we would like to introduce you to the talented people at AVA and our recent trip to their Quincy California headquarters. First we would like to recognize the young men that assembled the AVA Start Cart. Their names are printed on the top of the AVA Start Cart. In no particular order:
This group of talented employees has built undoubtedly one of the best looking M32A-60B Start Carts in the world. While traveling home, NAE™ Team members were stopped by people at gas stations, rest stops and restaurants from California to Washington. They didn't know what it was, but they all said, "It looked pretty cool, whatever it was!" The fact is the AVA Start Cart is made to the exact standards of all the company's GSE. AVA reconditions all types of GSE. AVA has a huge inventory of GSE and aircraft parts. One of the items they had was a F-104 Illustrated Parts Manual. We would like to thank Barbara Schoepp for taking the time to copy each and every page, then assembly the pages into two binders. Barbara is in charge of Document Control and is a Sales Representative at AVA. Next we would like to recognize Patsy Brown Shipping /Inventory Manager for AVA. While Ed, Bill and Keith were climbing in and around AVA acres of inventory, Patsy kept track of inventory accuracy as the team found lots of useful parts for later installation on the Eagle. Special thanks goes to Morgan Mosley. Morgan was responsible for recognizing the marketing potential of the North American Eagle™ World Land Speed Record Project and bringing it to the attention of AVA Executive Management Team. Morgan is in on the AVA Sales Team. NAE™'s contact at AVA is Sales Manager Leann Halsey. Leann coordinated the entire two days of activities between NAE™ and AVA. She is working on a display for an upcoming GSE show in Las Vegas that will feature the NAE™. Team NAE™ will be working closely in the next year to help them increase sales. Running the entire Quincy operation is Ken Wiegand AVA President. One of the reasons AVA is so successful is Ken's love of aviation. Like many of NAE™ Team members Ken is a license pilot and flies his own airplane. Shown below is Ken's T-28 Navy Trainer. Bob, Ed and Keith were given a special tour of this magnificent aircraft. When speed runs commence, we'll try to recruit Ken to use the T-28 as a photo plane. The entire North American Eagle™ Team would like to thank American Valley Aviation for their support.
