NAE™ Project: Update Archive March 10, 2000 Ladies & Gentlemen:
Above is yet another photo that Tony Landis sent us. This is a shot of 56-763 taking off of Edwards Air Force Base. We will be posting these to the Race Car Facts section in the near future. Progress continues in the North American Eagle shop this past week. All this week NAE Team members have been burning the midnight oil transforming the 56-763 into America's challenge to the world land speed record. With the help of volunteers Dirk Sundbaum, Darren Manning, and Bob Predmore damage panels are being replaced with shinny new material. We are still on track for late March date with the painter. Ron Norman has been working on the latch mechanism for the canopy. Ed has been scoping out the aft section which is made up of stainless steel. One area we will work on this weekend is the transition around the original F-104 wing root. With the wings removed it leaves an unsightly section that needs to be faired in. When completed, the exterior skin will will cover the area, following the shape of the surrounding body. This past Tuesday, the team visited the student body at Gates High School in Tacoma. We gave the students a one hour presentation on the History of Landspeed racing. The kids seem to enjoy the time, especially when we brought the entire school out to the parking lot for one of the lucky students to sit in the 828 Lakester. Mary Butler from the Tacoma News Tribune will be by the shop this Saturday to take some pictures for an upcoming feature article. That's it for now...Keith Zanghi We invite you to add a comment, or remark, about our program or the site. Interested in helping us make history and bring the record back to North America? Here's how!
