NAE™ Project: Update June 29, 2007 Ladies & Gentlemen: While in Florida seeing the Starfighters Air Exhibition Team, Keith Zanghi stopped by Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing. Located in Ocala, Florida, the museum houses some of the most influential examples of drag racing vehicles in the nation. Inside visitors can see Big Daddy’s Swamp Rat 1 through 34 dragsters on display. Land speed racers will enjoy the Bonneville Streamliner that put Big Daddy in the 200 mph club back in 1988 when he ran Swamp Rat 33 at 217.947 setting a new FX/GS record. Also on display is Craig Breedloves streamliner from 1964. Land speed racers will recognize the work of Jocko’s Porting Services on Swamp Rat 17. Also on display was Washington State resident Herm “NW Terror” Peterson’s streamliner. Aviation fans will also enjoy the A-7 Corsair II located on a stick just outside the complex. During the Vietnam War, Big Daddy did a lot of work for the military by visiting the troops. When he came back to America he offered his name to the recruiting efforts of the US Navy. Many of the land speed racers and hot rodders will remember the famous recruiting poster with Big on the aircraft carrier USS Lexington. Drag Racers and Land Speed Racers owe a great deal to this innovator of the sport. The museum is open every day of the year except Christmas. We invite you to add a comment, or remark, about our program or the site. Interested in helping us make history and bring the record back to North America? Here's how!
