NAE™ Project:
Update Archives

January 23, 1998

Ladies & Gentlemen:

Because we have been in a lull after Richard Noble/Andy Green set a new Land Speed Record, I haven't had much update material to write about. The world of LSR has certainly taken a whole new look at supersonic speed on the ground. The Thrust Team has moved the bar way up there! The North American Eagle Prototype (Phase 1) vehicle is being fashioned to run at airshows and other speed/flame/noise events. The NAE1 will also be used to give rides to interested customers. That brings us to Phase 2: The North American Eagle II.

Keith Zanghi, Ron Norman, John Kung, Dave Haller, Jon Higley and I are currently pulling together all the necessary pieces to campaign a vehicle based on the F-104 Starfighter fuselage design. It will run a J-79 with afterburner, no wings of course but the T-tail will look much like the original F104 tail.  Bob Pierson and a couple of his friends with Lockheed experience are designing the suspension. We have friends in British Columbia who have offered to supply engines, wheels, bearings
and so on. Organizations and individuals who have offered support will be announced as they make their support official.

Keith and I will be traveling to Dallas, Texas for the American Chemical Societies National Convention, March 29 to April 2. Their theme is "Innovations in the Automotive Industry". I'll give a little presentation on "the challenge of attempting a land speed record". Maybe the CEO of some major oil company will be in the audience, one can only hope!

As events occur, I'll keep you all informed. We North Americans want that record back from the Brits!

Edward J. Shadle, Project Manager.
