NAE™ Project:
Update Archives

January 4, 1997

Ladies & Gentlemen:

Edwards Air Force Base, Palmdale CA

Edwards Sign

The North American Eagle Team™ (NAE) is currently negotiating with the US Air Force for permission to make test runs. Project Manager Ed Shadle met with Air Force Officials on Tuesday September 17, 1996. As soon as the ink dries, we'll release the information.

Edwards AFB is the home of the Air Force Flight Test Center. The Test Pilot School, which includes the Test Engineers School, attracts the top pilots and engineers from all over the world.

Over 300,000 acres make up this huge military complex known as Edwards AFB. The entire area revolves around the natural phenomena known as Rogers Dry Lake Bed. Rogers Dry Lake provides a natural field that is extremely smooth and flat. It was here in 1929 that aviation pioneer John K. Northrop test flew his famed flying wings.

Edwards gained noriety in 1947, when General Chuck Yeager became the first man on earth to fly faster than the speed of sound, in the Bell X-1. General Yeager is still under contract with the USAF, and still flies jets each year. Recently it has become the back-up landing zone for Americas' Space Shuttle when the Florida runway isn't available.

Up until 1941, American Hot Rodders were also using the naturally flat lakebed for their "test flights." On April 26, 1996 members of the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) were invited back to Edwards. In the event known as the Muroc Land Speed Reunion, the SCTA members were once again conducting high speed test runs. The NAE™ Team was also in attendence, with a static display of the 40 foot long NAE™ LSR.
