NAE™ Project: Update Archives February 26, 2000 Update Ladies & Gentlemen:
This past week has been very interesting! Tony Landis, a NASA Dryden FRC photographer at Edwards AFB sent us a few JPEG photos and some information on the history of the F-104 fuselage (Serial # 56-763) used as the platform for the North American Eagle™. While looking through NASA DFRC archive's he found out the aircraft was used as chase plane for the X-15 project. Two famous pilots, Joe Walker (NASA's chief pilot who flew nearly every X-plane) flew 763 on 9/20/60 and Bill Dana (X-15 and lifting body pilot) had two listings in his log, Jan 13, 1965 and June 20,1968. It is ironic that the old bird will be returning to the 11 mile X-15 runway to set the World Land Speed record. Tony will be sending more information shortly. Read more about the history of the former Mach 2 aircraft in the site's classroom section. Some more good news. The team will be moving to Thun Field in Puyallup. Ed was able to secure some hangar space. The new shop is close to most of the crew. Ed will have more on this in our next update. Finally what everyone has been asking for. A line of North American Eagle merchandise will be offered for sale. Initial items include T-shirts, Official Team Jackets (Air Force style and Fleece), decals, pictures and hats. We should have the pictures and prices on the web in a few days. Thats it for now...Keith Zanghi We invite you to add a comment, or remark, about our program or the site. Interested in helping us make history and bring the record back to North America? Here's how!
