NAE™ Project: Update Archives April 30, 2005 Ladies & Gentlemen: Today's work party had Ed Shadle, Keith Zanghi, Jon Higley, Bill Eckberg, Steve Wallace, Earl Gratzer, Mark Seguin, Bernard, Shad, Dennis and Aaron McVay present to finish final tasks needing completion before loading the car into LevX Transporter for next weekend's video shoot run. With more work done on the canard test bed, it was moved aside so that Steve Wallace, the team's data acquisition scientist, could install the data acquisi-tion processor, provided by our sponsor Larson Davis and PCB Piezotronics, and connectors rack that he'd assembled into the electronics bay. He also made final adjustments to the data acquisition software that will monitor the multitude of various types of sensors on the car. Meanwhile, Bill Eckberg, the team's jet engine mechanic and crew chief, finished hooking up the dashboard's EGT gauge. Simultaneously, the rest of the team removed the running suspension from the car and installed the stub axle, while Ed Drumheller II completed an overhaul of his ailing sewing machine and finished packing the two chutes in their tubes. Mark smoothed off the rough edges of the hydraulic parachute packing stand, while the team loaded the fire supression foam tank back into Bernard's truck bed. This was Shad's last work party with the NAE™ crew. Next week he heads off to boot camp in the Navy. The next time we see him he'll be in uniform and starting his training school for EOD. We are proud of his service to country. After loading the car into the LevX Transporter, most of the team went home while Ed, Keith and Jon drove over to Yakima, Washington. They made the trip to attend the Civil Air Patrol's Annual Washington Wing conference and banquet to receive the 2004 LT. Col. Crum Memorial Award for Aerospace Education. This award was given in recognition of the project's historical aviation record offered to visitors within its classroom section of this site. For more photos of this event, you can visit the photo gallery page. In the group picture above, Capt. Patrick Smith, CAP, and Capt. Hollie Sargent, CAP, who are both team members as well, were also present at the awards ceremony. Maj. Russell Garlow, CAP, and the team's aviation graphic artist and mechanic, was co-MC with Capt.Didi Boyington, CAP, our team member in charge of test facility security. In case you're wondering, the dinner's theme was "The ' 50s & ' 60s" and Hollie won the ladies competition. She was looking very classy! She is with her fiance', Patrick, in the middle picture below. The NAE™ Project is honored and proud to have this prestigious award bestowed on it. We hope to continue developing more material of interest related to our project for those who find value in the historical significance of the airframe that is now our land speed car. Next weekend will see the team assembled at our test facility we were at back in March. This time, we will be collecting some quality video footage for mutliple uses; one being the ability for our visitors to view a clip of the car running up to 300 MPH here on the site. We invite you to add a comment, or remark, about our program or the site. Interested in helping us make history and bring the record back to North America? Here's how!
