NAE™ Project: Update Archive January 14, 2004 Ladies & Gentlemen: Team member Russell Garlow was invited to present the NAE program to students of the Fairwood Elementary School in Enumclaw on 13 January. Some 60 students, ranging from kindergarten through 4th grade came through in six sessions. The short video taken onboard the Thrust SSC was shown to give an idea of the speed and overall time that was required to reach mach 1. Discussions included the physics of breaking the sound barrier, the engine, the wheels, and the fuel we will be using. The kids were excited to hear about the car, and asked many insightful questions, not least of which was "why do you want to do this?" Russ simply couldn't come up with a better answer than that made famous by mountain climbers… because it's there. Displays included posters from the team, the helmet/mask combination, and the model of the original F-104A Starfighter. A one-page handout was given to each student and their teachers, and all were invited to come see the car when it can be arranged. All in all, a very successful and fun session with these very bright kids! We invite you to add a comment, or remark, about our program or the site. Interested in helping us make history and bring the record back to North America? Here's how!
