TeamNAE™: Meet
Russel Garlow
Technical Illustrator, Mechanic
Russell is originally from Northern California (Sacramento), and grew up there until moving to the Puget Sound region in 1988. While in Sacramento, he earned his Airframe and Powerplant ticket, and moved to Washington to look for employment in aerospace. He hired on with Boeing in Everett in 1989, and has been there ever since. He is a customer representative for Emirates Airline. He lives in the Marysville area with his wife Didi.
His artwork has been a hobby since he was very young, and aviation has always been the driving inspiration for that art. He's had aviation in his blood since my first trip to the airport. It has driven his education, professional life, volunteer time, and his hobbies. He's only had one class in advanced art, when he attended John F. Kennedy High School in Sacramento. Other than that, his skills have been self-driven. His mother is an accomplished artist, and his father an engineer, so he guesses he comes by it naturally.
His most notable projects are a series of pencil renderings of military aviation images, which he started in 1994. He started this as an experiment to see if he could get depth and "reflections" in graphite, and he's been pleased with the results. In 2000, he was able to get three of these prints made into a run of 1000 lithographs of each print. These he hopes to begin marketing, and break into the aviation art field on a (somewhat) professional level.
When he's not fixing airplanes or making art, he has other past-times to keep him busy. He is the Director of Aerospace Education for Civil Air Patrol in Washington State. He oversees the aerospace aspect of the cadets and senior training programs, working out of their headquarters at McChord AFB. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree through Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 2007, with plans to pursue a Masters degree in aeronautical science. He also works as a restoration volunteer at the Museum of Flight restoration center at Paine Field in Everett.
Russell first met Keith Zanghi in 2000 at a class taught by Boeing in Kent. Keith liked his lithographs, and asked him to submit his ideas for designs on the North American Eagle™. He is very pleased with the results, and the eagle on the side of our vehicle speaks for itself, especially when it's sitting in the sunshine!
