In this update: All eyes are on Alvord; Lots of visitors; Eagle getting attention; Team briefing and test run logistics.
Today’s Featured Sponsors
Team members signing in: Steve Wallace, Von Armstrong, Ed Shadle, Keith Zanghi, Chris Greene, Bernard McVay, Rich Pengelley, John Drury, Larry Martinson and family members, and Omar Chramosta. Getting in on the action were interns Andrew Kirk and Tristan Jonker.
Team member and sponsor, Bernard McVay (McVays Mobile Welding), came by the hangar with some friends and showed them around. Scott McConnell , his son, Mick and daughter Mylee, and friend Maria Taylor, all got a close up and first time introduction to the North American Eagle™. Scott is the Facility Manager of the Pacific Science Center and a fellow snowmobile enthusiast with Bernard. During the week Bernard stopped off at NAE Sponsor Covich-Williams and picked up a new supply of sorbents.
David Cohn and wife, Gerry, made a special trip down from the Woodinville wine country to touch bases. David is gathering material for a book on the project and has been following our test runs. Gerry got her first hand look at the car.
Work time prior to our October test runs is growing short. Lots of things to do and to think about. The on board Ecliptic Enterprises RocketCam™ system is nearly complete with the last wiring points traced down and the mounts in position.
The port side mid wheel door modification had Keith’s attention today. Ed was busy hooking up heat sensors for the magnetic braking system and gathering input on the best way to install the lines that will provide water cooling to the brake rotors. All hands joined in on inspecting and refolding the heavy tarp that will serve as the work area base, shielding the 56′ long jet car and its equipment from the desert floor.
Andrew and Tristan manned the ladders and scaled the heights to put our sponsor banners back up in the hangar. The banners were taken down and displayed at the Pacific Raceways NHRA event last month.
Ed and Keith brought the team up to date on their trip to Chicago and the IMTS 2012 event…and to the business at hand; the logisitcs involved in moving our operation, equipment, and jet car from our hangar to the remote Alvord Desert. Our volunteer team members are adjusting their schedules to commit to the test run dates. The transportation, set up, encampment, meals, and supplies present a formidable and costly challenge. So it goes, as Team NAE™ continues down the long road to a new world landspeed record.
CFD Analysis Continues
Working virtual this week is Darren Grove, Rex Walter, Ron Doll and Mike Thoe. They have been busy analyzing the air flow and stability and control of the vehicle using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The black lines are surface restricted streamlines (i.e. where the flow is near to the surface).
