NAE™ Project: Update Archives September 9, 1998 Ladies and Gentlemen: The North American Eagle™ (NAE) team is anxiously waiting for the word that the F-104 is arriving at the race car shop in Spanaway. I spoke with S&S Turbines the other day and Robin told me the J-79 he has picked out is in great shape and is ready to be shipped to us for fitting the 104. The first thing we have to do to the 104 is re-skin some portions and refit much of the interior. Next we get started on the suspension. When we get that sorted out then we fit the engine. It will be a long process and will take some real skill to do this correctly. While at Bonneville, Al Teague and I spent some time going over the steering mechanism he uses in his streamliner. I like the concept and we may find a way to adapt that mechanism to the 104. I also spend a little time with Tom Burkland and we discussed the J-79 using a mix of Propane to run the compressor and Jet A for the afterburner. This will take some head scratching but it sure sounds like the way to go. We're very close to getting some needed parts for the project as soon as we can clear the last hurtle of red tape. As soon as that is done, I'll update you all on the details. That's it for this update. Things are moving along and as long as we are moving forward rather than backward, I'm happy. Keep tuned......Ed Shadle We invite you to add a comment, or remark, about our program or the site. Interested in helping us make history and bring the record back to North America? Here's how!
