NAE™ Project: Update

September 10, 2008

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Yesterday Ed Shadle, John Winchester, Omar Charmosta, John Drury and Keith Zanghi were at the hangar to work with the folks from FARO Technologies.

Dave Mihal, Mike Schulz and Scott Hayes from FARO Technologies brought by one of their FARO Photo Laser Scanners and digitized the 56 foot long North American Eagle™, The portable non-contact measurement system is used to accurately capture 3D data. The system rotates 360° and measures everything within its line of sight up to 76m away. With a scan rate of 120,000 points per seconds and an accuracy of up to ±2mm the Eagle will have nearly 18 million points describing the exterior surface!

The collection of data points is called a “cloud of points” can then be converted to surfaces. We will use the final format for our Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) analysis. Using a high powered computer, we can then accurately predict how the air will react with the Eagle as it approaches the transonic range.

Combined with our earlier scans using the FAROArm and FARO Laser Tracker, fairings can be developed in the computer and then transferred to machine code for manufacturing.

FARO Technologies is a long time supporter of the North American Eagle™ and is part of our other technology sponsors consisting of Dassault Systèmes (CATIA V5 Software), INCAT (CATIA V5 Integrator), Verisurf Software and Lenovo (Desktop and Laptop solutions).

Brian Wilson

Also stopping by was Brian Wilson from Olympus Industrial. Brian is the representative for Olympus iPlex FX Borescopes and iSPEED HG high speed video cameras used by the Eagle.
