NAE™ Project: Update

Featured Sponsors

May 8, 2010

Ladies and Gentlemen:

On a beautiful sunny Saturday,  another work party gather at the hangar to ready the North American Eagle™ for a day of engine testing. Team members present were  Sam Yellowbird, John Drury, Dave Selby, Tom Tiede, Larry Martinson, Chris Greene, Jeremy Mathews, Bill Eckberg, Keith Zanghi and Ed Shadle.

The day started out with a few odds and ends in order to get the engine ready to slide back in the North American Eagle™. Tom, Dave and Bill did some last minute safety wiring and then it was all men on deck as we slid the 42,500 hp S&S Turbine Services Ltd engine back into the Eagle.

We have come a long way since we first installed the engine on the Discovery Show Mega Builders - Worlds Fastest Wheels. Back then it took the entire day. Now with some help from a gantry manufactured by McVay's Mobile Welding, plus a lot of practice, the process took less than a half hour.

After the engine was installed Dave and Bill did all the final hook ups: Throttle linkage, fuel lines and electrical cannon plugs. John drove the Lev X Race Car Transporter over to the hanger while Ed, John and Chris removed the McVay Mobilizer and placed it under the front wheel. Bill, Larry, Chris and Jeremy filled the car with some Small & Sons Oil Distributing kerosene.

After lunch the team rolled the car out onto the taxiway and plug in the American Valley Aviation Start Cart. Outfitted with new Optima Batteries from Interstate Batteries the AVA M32-60B start cart begin the process of bringing the Eagle to life. She purred like a kitten (and roared like a lion) as the engine was brought to an idle of 66 %.

The test was a complete success and engineers gave the go ahead to do a full afterburner test next weekend.

On the Newsstands

If you own a Falcon Business Jet, then you have seen the North American Eagle in the latest issue of Falconer Magazine, Issue 36 / 2010. If you're not lucky enough to own a multi-million dollar business jet, the you can read The Quest To Be The Fastest Car On Earth written by Grant Kielczewski, Managing Editor on line. It features extraordinary photos of our July 2009 test session at The Black Rock Desert, and tells the story of tenacity and resourcefulness as our team challenges the 763 mph world land speed record.
