NAE™ Project: Update Archive May 15, 2003 Ladies & Gentlemen: Today, Team NAE™ was visited by representatives of Allied Aerospace, a wind tunnel test facility and a prime contractor for several of the government’s highest priority transformational systems including high-speed air-breathing weapons, hypersonic aircraft, and tactical VTOL UAV’s. Our visitors were Robert Boswell - Manufacturing Specialist - Donna Simmons - Director of Operations - and David Sanford - Aerodynamics Engineer - who came to the shop to see the vehicle and discuss how they could support our project. After explaining our project goal and needs, David enlightened us to the fact that our needs presented a conundrum of sorts; while low speed wind tunnels were designed to measure ground effect on aerodynamic bodies, this data is not what we need. Yet, supersonic wind tunnels will not give us the data we need either, because they are not designed to provide ground effect data at those speeds. Essentially, we need a testing facility that does not exist because the two have never been needed before. They told us they would talk to contacts they knew to see if any research or models of the F-104 were still available and see if we could get the information needed. We invite you to add a comment, or remark, about our program or the site. Interested in helping us make history and bring the record back to North America? Here's how!
