NAE™ Project: Update July 31, 2010 Ladies and Gentlemen: Summer is flying by and the last day of July, 2010, found Ed Shadle, Keith Zanghi, Von Armstrong, Steve Wallace, Sam Yellowbird, Chris Greene and more of the Shadle clan, Rachel, Alex, and Cameron working in our Spanaway hangar. The two parachute cans have been welded in place and work continues on the design and fabrication of the fairing-in over the rear axle and wheels. Ed and Keith measured and cut steel plate material to install in the mid wheel compartment. This will act as both a safety shield and as a containment for expanding foam that will fill in an empty space and serve as a barrier against lakebed dust. The two steel plates had to be bent to the right size and degree of curvature to conform to the interior of the fuselage....not an easy task without a powerful hydraulic press. Keith, Steve, Von and Chris worked it out. The vertical press became the use of Keith's pick-up truck...right front wheel. Jacking up the front end and using an assortment of blocks and angle iron beneath the plates, the vehicle was lowered repeatedly onto the plates, one at a time, until they were bent to Keith's specifications. Chris and Keith began the work of installing them into the compartment. Ed and Cam were busy circuit tracing to fix a wiring problem that won't go away. And both were preparing to get Ed's roadster ready for the annual runs on the Bonneville Salt Flats....coming up soon. And the beat goes on. More to come next week as work continues on the North American Eagle™ and the quest for a new world landspeed record.
