NAE™ Project: Update July 6, 2009 Ladies and Gentlemen: Over the last three days various parts of the team have departed Washington state for northwestern Nevada’s Black Rock desert just north of Gerlach. The team’s two semi-tractor trailers left Friday, several team members left together Saturday, and others have trickled in over Sunday and Monday. Present today were Ed & Elaine Shadle, Cam & Rachel Shadle with their son Alex, Keith Zanghi, Bill Eckberg, Jon Higley, Steve Green, Steve & Libby Wallace, Tim Finley, Sean Rondestvedt, Rob Martinson, Gino Sanfilippo, Bernard McVay, Bryce Ockerman, Chris Greene, Jeremy Matthews, Dave Selby, John Zambrano, Corey Dawson, Alan VanHolland, Rich & Tom Pengelley, Shauna, David Cohen and Sally Crossfield-Farley. After surveying the playa for several hours Sunday, the decision was made to not locate our camp where we thought we would be, but instead, settle for further south just off the three mile access road. This location proved to be in better shape than further north due to the amount of people who’d attended the Independence Day festivities the day before. A course was laid out and, because of the softness of the playa, a few hours were spent driving several of our team vehicles up and down the course to establish it. Unloading of trailer #2 of much of the support equipment and gear used up the remaining daylight. Monday was spent erecting the shelter provided by our sponsor WRS Cover-All. The task was challenging to do with wind gust up to 40 mph blowing dust and sand into everything. By the end of the day the NAE™ had been unloaded and running suspension installed. There was a brief three hours calm from the wind, but by early evening, the wind picked up again steadily. As a result of moving our base camp, our Internet service provider had to take an extra day to reestablish camp as well. So, daily updates will continue throughout the remaining week. Tomorrow: Tuesday we plan to finish preparing the NAE™ and conduct an engine run test. If all goes well – especially the winds from the west calming down – we hope to get in a run before the day ends. On Television We continue to talk with a half dozen television production companies interested in doing a documentary on our upcoming test session.
The North American Eagle™ has been featured in over eight television shows and every major television network. Recently NBC / Universal filmed the team for a possible pilot. On the Newsstands
This week the project made the front cover of Desktop Engineering magazine. You can read the David Cohn story describing the engineering behind the Eagle, and some of the people who make it happen. On the newsstands is an article on the project in the June 2009 issue of FLY RC magazine. The very popular magazine can be found at most grocery stores and all book stores.
