NAE™ Project: Update January 13, 2007 Ladies & Gentleman: Global Warming has not been a problem in the Pacific Northwest as we have been besieged with a year of cold weather. Fighting the snow covered ground, Sean Rondestvedt, Steve & Libby Wallace, Omar Chramosta, Von Armstrong, John Zambrano and Keith Zanghi plowed there way through 4 inches of snow to meet and continue working on our goal to break the World Land Speed Record. Jon Higley decided to work virtual from home and improve the website. This week the team unscrewed most of the panels that could be removed in preparation for all the work in the upcoming months. John, Von, and Sean pulled covers for the hydraulic bay and dropped the engine and mid-wheel bay doors. In the next few weeks, James Bittner from Olympus NDT will be inspecting both areas. Using Eddy Current NDT equipment, James can check for cracks the full length of the keel beam and key components in the mid-wheel box. Steve received a package from PCB Piezotronics. Inside were some additional accelerometers that will be placed on the Eagle in time for our next test runs. Libby spent a great deal of time sorting through our huge tub of aircraft fasteners. She separated the standards into smaller containers. Eventually we will sort them by size. It’s a tedious and time consuming job, but one that is really important. Towards the end of the day, the team moved from the warm confines of the hangar and went into the LevX® Transporter to install about a dozen eyelets. When we load the trailer, it never fails that we run out of spots to attach tie-downs to. After completing the job it looks like we could use a few more. During the day Keith got a call from Molly Bakewell. She talked about the upcoming Aerospace Testing Expo 2007 Europe to be held in Munich Germany. PCB Europe and UK is planning a large display which will include the 9 foot long model of the Eagle. We also talked about the possibility of another appearance at Aerospace Testing Expo 2007 in Anaheim. Jon Higley spent all day Saturday (and most of the week) working on the website. Along with Patricia Woods, the two will be unveiling a new look for the site. We are really excited about it, and believe me, you will know when it is online. Look for the new site in about mid-February. Keith made an announcement for a new monthly newsletter. The paper version will be sent to all sponsors and Eagle’s Lair Members. The paper version will pull from the website the most interesting stories, feature a Team Member of the Month and featured Sponsor of the Month. Sponsors, Team Members, Eagle Lair Members will be asked to contribute copy for the publication. More information will be coming. In the previous week, Keith and Ed did an interview with Dassault Systemes for an upcoming publication. When more information is available we will let you know. Speaking of publications, RC Driver Magazine has a great article on the project in their February Issue. US visitors can pick one up at their local supermarket or book store. According to Ed Shadle, it is one of the “most technically accurate articles he has ever read.”
