Hey Ed. I'm Dean from Ohio. I just finished watching your special on the Science Channel (Discovery presentation). I was interested and just wanted to congratulate you on what you have accomplished to date. I'm a student at The Ohio State University and am in the process of receiving my degree for aerospace engineering and I was just amazed at the facets of science, mathematics and engineering that was involved. Way to go to you and your men and cheers, I wish you the best of luck and I'll be rooting for you.

Hi Ed and the Team,

All of us from the SSC team were pleased to be able to meet up with you all at Black Rock earlier this month.

It is an achievement for you just to get there and set up, let alone carry out testing.  As you saw, the conditions were against you, with the desert in very poor condition (it normally doesn't have the ridges) and lots of fine dust that blows up into white-outs.  Usually the storms are brief as it is only dust from where vehicles have broken the surface up, and it is kept to a minimum by marking a "roadway" down wind of the camp and track.  Unfortunately this year the surface was heavily broken up, and was particularly friable due to lack of rains in winter.

The important thing is that you have now experienced driving on the desert on aluminium wheels, checked out procedures and systems, and hopefully got some good footage for your sponsors video.  If the video crew are worth their salt, they should be able to edit some exciting footage which will hopefully raise your profile and attract more sponsorship.  Finally, you managed to bring the car back in one piece - you need an awful lot of sponsorship to cover a major breakage!

We are glad that some of you were able to join us at our re-union BBQ at Bev's Miners Club.  This was a joint effort by the SSC team, Bev, and some of the towns folk.  This is a classic example of the hospitality and generosity that Bev and the townsfolk of Gerlach have given to LSR racers since Richard Noble first went in 1982.

On a technical note, I work for a manufacturer of analytical instruments for oil and fuel laboratories and refineries.  I was recently researching into the use of bio-esters in kerosines such as Jet A1.  The problem is that the bio-ester will wax at temperatures of about 20 degrees C (vegetable esters) to 23 degrees C (animal tallow based esters).  When mixed with the Jet Turbine Fuel (JTF), the waxing temperature is lowered considerably, however the bio-ester tends to separate after a while and the waxing temperature then goes back up.  Additives help, but so much is required that other properties of the JTF are affected.  This is such a problem that in Europe bio content in JTF is banned and if a diesel (typically 5% bio content) has been pumped down a fuel pipeline followed by JTF, the first 1000 litres of the JTF are returned to the refinery because of cross contamination.

We will forward photos etc during the next few days,

Remember, the possible is easy, the impossible takes a little longer!

Kind Regards,
Steve

Hi Ed, thanks for the link, but, more importantly, for taking me into your friendship during our recent visit. The footage looks fantastic, you have a great car, team and driver, keep working hard at it mate and let's see you back at Black Rock ready to "go for it "!  You are a champion and inspiration to all of us. Please pass on my regards to the lovely Elaine and all of your great crew...

Very best wishes,
Rosco McGlashan - October 30, 2007

Ed, you dont remember me, but I used to fly out of Spanaway at Beechwest in late 90s. I certainly remember you...and the 104 frame that sat in your hangar!  Watching the Discovery channel last night and being able to tell my kids.."Hey, I know him!" made me very proud of your efforts and endeavor to retake our rightful place in speed history. My kids will be tracking you as well as I. We will be sending a little something to help out.
Thank you for making us proud sir.

Dear Mr. Shadle,
I saw the program on cable about your project to break the land speed record. Very impressive vechicle, crew, and ambitions!  I am suprised that you have not found a major sponsor; considering the massive amount of wealth availiable in this country.  Have you tried Budwiser?  Wasn't the "unofficial" 700mph rocket car in the 70's sponsered by Bud?
Something like: Budwiser King of Beers Proud to Sponser the King of Land Speed.
Just a thought. If I had as much money as somebody like Bill Gates I'd give you enough to make it happen.  However, I am just a working stiff and cannot even afford the Eagles Lair Club.
I do hope that you realize your dream and bring the record back to North America!
Sincerely,
Chuck - Sept. 18, 2007

I knew this team would take the high road on Steve Fossett. Let's all keep him in our thoughts. Fingers crossed all will be well.

Hi Guys,

Just saw Megabuilders tonight on TV. Hope all goes well and the record is brought to North America.

As an Ex-Pat (From the UK) now living in North America, I do hope you succeed.

Stay safe.

The F-104 Starfighter had its day in history as one of the ultimate speed demons of the stratosphere, surpassing all others in its thirst for speed.   Reborn from the dying embers of its once proud heritage to reclaim its glory.  It has shed its wings for wheels and racing stripes.  From the ashes, this "phoenix" has taken another name.  Now it has set its desire to to conquer voracious hunger for ground speed superiority.

Maria Pegorin - August 28, 2007

Hello I just want to say good luck in your quest I hope you make it. This is a awsome site with lots of info.very nice.

P.S. We do need the land speed record back in North America.

Mike Joncas Ontario,Canada. - August 28, 2007

Best wishes for your success at breaking the record. Bring it back NAE!
Here's to all of the team and your goals, and safety.

When I served in the Canadian Forces, (CFB Cold Lake) one of my favorite aircraft was the CF104.

I think it is great to see this bird in the spotlight once again, even if it is not in the air.

It still looks great.

Best of hope to you and your team.

Hello,

I saw the show on Discovery Channel about what you and your team is doing, and was just blown away. You people are what the real America is all about, and I can barely wait until you succeed, and you will ! What an idea and concept of using the F-104 as the basis for your vehicle and doing all this for a fraction of what Noble spent. Don't get me wrong, what they did is amazing and fantastic, but it's time for that record to come back where it belongs, the United States of America , and you guys are my hero's for doing so in such an ingenious, and American way.

Keep your spoilers on and I'll be watching when you get the land speed record back. A huge thanks to all the team of the North American Eagle™ for doing what we all wish we could. You people make people like me proud to live in this great country, even if most don't realize how truly lucky they are. Where else could a group like you have do what you're doing ?

Sincerely,
Ed Portmann - April 24, 2007

I would like to join the 800 Club, many thanks in advance.

I was privileged to attend a briefing given by Ed Shadle at the NAE hangar yesterday when our Glass Odyssey Corvette Club made a post-breakfast drive down to Puyallup (I own a Marina Blue 1980 Corvette Coupe). It was a milestone event for me as having met Craig Breedlove and his Spirit of America car when I was a 10 year old in 1964 (my late father was Manager of Shell Oil's Wood River, Illinois refinery at the time); I've always been interested in the Land Speed Record along with things aeronautical so Ed's briefing was very special for me and I'm sure for the other club members. The F-104 Starfighter along with the B-58 Hustler are my all-time favorite military aircraft; also my nephew, James Mark Hogge - Major USAF retired flew the U-2 and B-1.

Thanks again, Ed and the very best of luck to you and all of your team - I'll be following your effort with avid interest!

Sincerely,
Michael G. ("Red") Hogge

Learned about you guys on the Discovery channel. Very impressive, a little crazy, but still very cool !!!!!!!!!!!!! Bring the record back to the U.S.A. Hammer down, don't lift 'till you hear glass breaking and smell smoke.

Hello,

I discovered your Web site this evening, and was delighted to hear of your group's attempts at the land speed record. I understand that you consider the Black Rock Desert the ideal venue. I would like to pledge my support for you project in any way that I might be of assistance. I live in Winnemucca, Nevada, which is fairly close to the Black Rock Desert. I am a physician, and have quite a lot of experience directing the Humboldt County Emergency Medical Service. I love the motor sports, and have been involved in vintage formula car racing, and exotic sports car collection for years. If I might be of assistance to you, please let me know.

Sincerely,
Chet Stringham - April 2, 2007

Gentlemen,

I have followed land speed racing for quite awhile now and I am very impressed with what you have here. What you folks have undertaken is to be commended. I followed Richards deal from day one and have seen pics that is just awesome. I will follow this project like I did his as you present an honorable thing here. After all I am a full blooded American just like most of you. And yes, I want to see the record brought back home. Where it belongs , as America is the World leader . Keep up the great work and God bless all of you.

Signed, Charles Murrah - April 2, 2007

Jon,

So there I am, sitting on a couch with a woman I've had an incuarable crush on for a half-dozen years; she's asleep with her head in my lap.  All in all, I'm pretty happy with the situation -- even if our conversation is a bit one-sided.

I have one hand gently playing with her hair and the other on the remote control for the TV.  I'm flipping through the channels fairly rapidly when I reach the educational ones and I catch a glimpse of someone I recognize.....YOU!

I must've roused her with my excitement to get back to the channel I'd just flipped past so carelessly.  She wakes momentarily and asks "Why did you stop playing with my hair?"  I half heard what she asked, but my attention was focussed on finding YOU on the television again. (Did I mention how much I adore this woman?)  She stammers out another sentence that was either incomprehensible......or I was ignoring her.  She repeats it and I'm shocked she's asking what I'm watching. (Like there's a chance in hell she can actually focus on it)  Since she's asked twice so I tell her at about the same time I arrived back at the channel YOU are on.

She actually stayed awake for the remainder of the show and seemed genuinely interested.  I recall her saying something to the effect of "I sure hope they succeed...." as she drifted off to sleep again.  At the time I think I interpreted it as "Mark, you're the man of my dreams and I'd like to...", but I digress.

I related that story to you for a few reasons.  The first was to say how cool I thought it was to see the team and their efforts get some excellent coverage.  The next was to make you understand how intrigued I am by the project that I stopped paying attention to this woman. (If I were married to her I'd be in the dog-house for sure!)  The last was to tell you that a woman that could barely care about speed in any way/shape/form, that has no idea about the years of effort involved, who's never even met ya'll, was truly enthused by the presentation; enough to keep her awake AND to distract her from yelling at me for neglecting her.....even momentarily.

Wishing you & the team the very best, as always,

Mark - April 2, 2007

The guestbook comments submitted and entered onto the site during the gap of time represented by this space, were lost when the switch over took place at the end of March. Sorry folks, but as the saying goes, "@#&! happens".

This is Jan From the Netherlands.

First of all I want to wish you all the success in this amazing project.

I think that the use of a F104 Starfighterbody is a great honour to all the man and woman who designed and built this fantastic aircraft.

I really hope that you will take the record back to the US of A .

When the time comes I wish you a safe ride.

Greetings a Lockheed F104 Starfighter fan.

Hi. I’ve been following the NAE  “car” where ever I could. This AM I saw the Discovery chanel present the first run.  GREAT stuff. YOU GOTTA BRING THE RECORD HOME as there are two national groups involved. Besides, the Brits used two engines, when only one is really needed when you know what and how to get it done.

THANX. Keep the BIRD rolling.  Respectfully submitted:  HANNIBAL

Dear Mr. Shadle,

I just watched the mega builder special on the Discovery Channel and enjoyed it very much. It is men like you and your crew that made us the free and great country that most today take for granted. The entrepreneurial spirit with dreams, inspiration and courage to do what others might think impossible. I wish I was a wealthy man and could sponsor your team, but well short of that, you have my  respect, admiration and support. I know you will be the one to break the speed record and I will be watching.

All the best,

Happy New Year to the entire team.

That little extra step your good folks took this past Saturday...saving the table cartons...was as excellent as it was, no doubt, obvious. There are at least 800 good reasons why that sort of "waste-not-want-not" approach is going to help you guys reach your ultimate goal.  Thanks again for the continuous updates.

Frank Chillemi, January 8, 2007

I just finished watching your show on the Discovery Channel and boy it was fascinating. I wish you all the luck in the world to break England's record and after seeing you guys I believe you have the confidence and vision to do so. Good luck to all.

Just watched the Discovery's Megabuilders --  You go Guys!!!  You rock!

Hi,

My name is Jim Somervell and I just watched your show on Discovery. It was awesome. I am thrilled that you are going to do this and I know that it will be an awesome feat. Good luck to you and the whole team and I will be watching and supporting.

Awesome site as well.

James Somervell - January 8, 2007

Liked the Jan. 8th TV show with the historical facts about your car.  Did not know about your effort, but it was welcome news.  Good to hear about you helping Force with your attendance at his show.  I'll mention that to him when I see him.  Hope you succeed in attaining your goal.
