NAE™ Project: Classroom - LSR Competitors
Steve Fossett's Sonic Arrow: In October of 2007, Steve Fossett announced his intent to go for the world land speed record. This was to be done using Craig Breedlove's former Spirit of America with some modifications done to it by engineers he'd hired.
On Labor Day of that same year, he took off from a small
airport in Nevada for a 3 hour trip, but never returned. After several months of searching, he, nor his aircraft he was flying, was found. On October 15, 2007 the team placed the Sonic Arrow out on the Black Rock playa for a photo op with the press at the same time the North American Eagle was testing further north, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the existing record.
After his widow, Peggy, had him declared legally dead, she had no further interest in the LSR project Steve had been pursuing. With no driver found that came along with a sponsor to fund it, the latest word is that the car is up for sale; possibly to the museum near Winnemuca, Nevada. What they intend to do with it is anyone's guess. Perhaps we'll find out in the future when an as yet unknown team announces their intent to use it, or someone discovers it in a museum somewhere.

Almost a year after Steve Fosset's disappearance, an off-trail hiker stumbled across the plane wreckage which was later confirmed to be the very one Fossett had been flying. the next few weeks were spent searching the area around the crash site in a scramble to beat the onset of winter storms. His remains were found about a half mile from the wreckage, but it was only his bones which were left from the wildlife which had found his remains.
Bloodhound SSC: Announced internationally in 2009, this project seeks to design & build a vehicle with a combination jet turbine / Bloodhound missile rocket booster to achieve three different records of 800mph, 900mph & 1,000mph. Project Manager Richard Noble (1983 record holder @ 633mph in Thrust2) and Andy Green (RAF pilot & current record holder @ 763mph in Thrust SSC in 1997) bring impeccable credentials to their national effort, supported not only by a dedicated following of their countrymen throughout the U.K., but also a country wide educational outreach program to revitalize interest in the S.T.E.M. subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) of primary to college level students in Great Britain.
Much of their success is due to Richard Noble's marketing savy, as well as his track record of successfully delivering on his word to sponsors - twice! The North American Eagle project has long been friends with Noble, Green, Ackroyd & Ayers over the duration of our project and have shared in a supportive manner each other's endeavor to take land speed racing in the unlimited class to the next level.
Currently the project is in the design/construction phase and it is unlikely that the car will not be ready for any test runs until the latter part of 2012; assuming all goes well.
Aussie Invader 5R : Rosco McGlashen has recently announced his intention to go for the 1,000mph record. Currently the fastest Australian, with a record of 642mph with the Aussie Invader 2, McGlashen is working a deal with SpaceDev, the same company that was integral in the recently successful SpaceShipOne shot in June, 2005. For details, go to his web site. This image is of his concept car being designed by John "Ackers" Ackroyd of the Isle of Wight.
