828

The #828 Lakester was built and raced by Bud Jones from San Jose, CA. Ed Shadle was crew chief and occasional driver for many years. When Bud decided to retire his competition license he sold the 828 car to Ed. The Lakester has been run mainly with a flathead Ford engine and has held the class record several times at El Mirage Dry Lake. The fasted speed attained with the flathead was 182.202 at Bonneville in 1988. After a disastrous third pass at the 1999 Muroc meet (the flathead was hauled away in a wheelbarrow) #828 was fitted with a 350 Chev engine. In 2000 #828 finally reached 230 mph but that was in the C Gas Lakester class. Seth Hammond owns that record and Ed came up about 30 mph short. Not to worry! In 2001 the #828 Lakester will be running in the E Gas class with a 258 inch small block. The engine sports Brodix heads, Venolia pistons, Carillo rods, Competition cam valve train, dry sumped, Hilborn injected and everything coated by Perfomance Coatings including Cryo treatment of the 283 crank and valve springs. The engine will be installed and test and tune begins real soon.
