NAE™ Project: Scott Crossfield & X-15
April 15, 2008
Ladies & Gentlemen:
There are several reasons for this page:
We believe it is only fitting to honor this great aviator by providing our visitors with a collection of video links about the X-15's history.
The X-15 flew 199 times; Scott piloted the X-15 fourteen times , all during the first thirty flights. The X-15's first eight flights were piloted by Scott (he flew eleven of the plane's first twelve flights).
X-15 Makes Captive Flight, March 10, 1959 (This “captive” flight was not without risk.) |
X-15 Glides, June 6, 1959 (Flight #1, planned glide, reached mach 0.79 or 522 mph and attained an altitude of 37,550 feet MSL.) |
X-15 Makes Powered Flight, September 17, 1959 (Flight #2, the first powered flight, reached mach 2.11 or 1,393 mph, and reached an altitude of 52,341 feet MSL.) |
X-15 Makes Emergency Landing, November 5, 1959 (Flight #4 resulted in an emergency landing because of an engine fire with structural damage to the fuselage after landing. The X-15 reached mach 1.0 or 660 mph and attained an altitude of 45,462 feet MSL. |
